THE FAB CAMPER…..HOW TO GO ( ALMOST ) EVERYWHERE

CONCEPT

This project start as a house project. The first concept was to make a house where the electronics can help to improve our living space, but for butget and time reason I scale the idea in where you can fabricate a small living space with some of the same electronics improvements. THE FAB CAMPER

The project is still in the making process and I will show the prototype or a section of it in where I design from the structure of it, to one of the automatizations that can be make ( intelligent window screen ). also I will show some of the final project start construction and other automatizacion ( intelligent electric off grid system ).

FINAL CONCEPT

WHAT IT DOES

The main purpose is to make a lightweight structure that one man can assemble and the purpose of the window screen is that with the light intensity it will open or close to improve the light inside the camper

STRUCTURE

When I start the design, one of the importat thing that I want, was the optimization of the material and have the less waste of it, so the design that I do, was moduleted to the dimensions of the mdf panel and the working space of the machine 1.2 mts x .9mts

The shape of the camper come from the simple and more efficient shape against the rain and the sun. From the milling machine assigment I learned about the different types and shapes for the structure and joints of wikihouse. I feel that one thing that I improve from the wikihouse was the shape of the components of the struture, making them more straight and easier to nest in the cut sheets.

When I decide to use the laser cut to make it instead of the milling as in wikihouse, was to have more precise and clean cuts because of the scale of the project.

2D CAMPER DESIGN

for the design of the prototype I start the drawing with Rhino and Cad sofware. With this programs I was able to make mocks and 3d digital views of the camper. This help me a lot with the visualization of the whole project and see the mistakes I can make the changes. After some tries I was able to have this cut sheets to do my first scale mock.

CUT FILE STRUCTURE

What I learn in this process was to make sure the material thick, because the real life dimension has millimetrical differences that can make me fail some times. 9mm is not 9.2mm

CAMPER DESIGN

As I result I realized the many types of houses I can make from a open sources as wikihouse with a basic layout and make either small o large changes that can lead into a complete desgin with the same definition and process of construction.

JOINTS

The joints in the structure was one of the main issue in the process because I had to make sure it really clips and hold the mdf. I did some tests of different designs and parts of joints in real scale to be sure they work correctly. During the tests I was changing the lenght, width of the piece to see how it respond to the flexibility it needed to work. As I result I got one kind of joint for the whole camper, the only variation I needed was to extend one of the legs to support the thicker parts.

WINDOW SCREEN DESIGN

As the main Idea of the project was to have a relation between the oudoors and the camper, here is my opportunity to make that happen and make the camper interact with the context. So this part of the Camper,  is one of the most import part of the project. because is in here, where the electronic output work.

The first step to start was to design the two part of this. the structure of the window ans screens and the inside mechanism that connect the motor and host the electronis.

For the window structure I start again with the digital design process in where I make the draws and the 3d model of it. All this to make some mocks for reference and develop the proper mechanism for it.

At the same time of the design process of the window structure I also start the thinking and the design of the screen  moves and how to make it work with just one servo motor.

As part of the process as in other parts in the project. was the prototype in real scale. Ans as you see below, heres the solution of the screen movement and the laser cut componts that I use. also the are some images of the 3d print part that attach the servo motor with the screen mechanism.

What I learn in this part of the project , basically was the first understanding of a mechanism, how it going to move and what it needs to move. This was my first design of something like this so in where I had difficulties where in how to simplify the mechanism for not to make it very complex and with the simpliest movement defining the kind of screen and movement with what kind of motor and the adaptation for the project with a cool and simple design.

-ELECTRONIC DESIGN

CONCEPT IDEA

This Part of the Course was and still is my weak point, but in the other hand I really lost the fear and start to understand how it work, what is about the components and the process of design. In the first approach of the final project I had the idea to measure energy and there I find some interest project that can help me, but as a beginner was hard and dangerous, because the high power electricity on the devices, so I jump to a safer and easier project that still was in the concept of my project idea.

This big project for me was a simple light sensor with a servo motor controlled with the modify satshakit board of Daniele Ingrassi, programmed with the arduino IDE code.

FABRICATION PROCESS

For the fabrication of the microcontroller I start to modify it to have an extra power supply because I still didn´t know what kind of servo I need

Ones that PCB was finish I start to program it but I did success. in the process I try with my Fab ISP and also with the arduino as ISP .

The real challenge for me, and still is is programming something designed by me. My fabrication process of the PCB was improving during the course, but I still have some mistakes that I still can´t see and that make me have problems as I have them in my project. But still I do believe that this maked me realized a lot of things that I need to keep practicing and developing.

Without saying I´m and expert I think I´m getting better with the programming language structure.

  • GENERAL CONCLUSIONS

What work is the structure and the screen mechanism what don´t is still my microcontroller, i think that I´m close to make it work, but at the end the hole project was a lot of trying and learn, and deal with the electronic frustation. the project is still in progress and it will not finish here, so I´m sure that it will work soon.

The Experience of the course was  really hard , but very satisfactory, all the new things and the deferents approach to the next projects will make them better. MAKE ALMOST EVERYTHING is something that I really want con continue. The great people, network and team that we met, live with and work with was priceless.
